Press Release Summary = Recently released as a pdf document on the internet, the
Proceedings of the Ist International Seminar of Medical Entomology at Bhopal- 2003
brings many new results on the control of a variety of mosquitoes and other insects
and the diseases they transmit to man and animals. In this seminar which was jointly
organised by the Annals of Medical Entomology (A.M.E.), The Literature Museum
Society (N.G.O.) and the Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, M.P., India, 15 research
scientists from India and abroad, presented their papers on 19 and 20th January,
2003 at Bhopal. Edited by Dr. Zakir Husain Husainy, Chief Editor, A.M.E., this
Proceedings provides latest information on the bionomics, of a variety of mosquitoes
and other insects and the diseases they transmit like malaria, filaria, dengue,
cutaneous leishmaniasis, JB encephalitis etc. and suggests new strategies for
controlling them and for future studies.

information on the bionomics, of a variety of mosquitoes and other insects and the
diseases they transmit like malaria, filaria, dengue, cutaneous leishmaniasis, JB
encephalitis etc. and suggests new strategies for controlling them and for future
studies.

Other topics this Proceedings include: A pragmatic review on the recent developments
in the detection of parasites in vectors using molecular tools; Mosquito species
diversity in Sunderbans, West Bengal - An indicator of human interference in the
mangrove ecosystem; rDNA-PCR assay for the detection of the vector species of
Anopheles fluviatilis in mosquito pools, An integrated approach of control to reduce
malaria, filaria and dengue fever vectors; Thymol from the essential oil of
Trachyspermum ammi Linn. sprague seeds as repellent and insecticidal against
Anopheles stephensi Liston, 1901; Studies on feeding pattern of the major vectors
of the Filariasis in rural areas of Kerala State, India; Comparative efficacy of
Neem oil and DEPA in repelling sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi, the vector of cutaneous
leishmaniasis; Population dynamics of Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles (Diptera:
Culicidae) in relation to Japanese encephalitis virus transmission in Kerala state,
South India; Development of an insect repellent DEPA (N,N-Diethyl Phenylacetamide)
for personal protection against insect bites; Mosquito larvivorous potential of some
indigenous fishes, and Forensic entomology: Recent development and practical
approach in the medico-legal field.

Emeritus Prof. Dr. Ravi Prakash, retired Vice Chancellor, Bhopal University
described this \"as an important publication giving a latest picture of insect borne
diseases in India.\"

\"Though many seminars are organized in India on medical entomology\" said Dr.
C.J.Babu, Head, Pesticide division, Godrej Pvt. Ltd., and one of the 42 delegates
\"but only a few are well documented. The Proceedings of the Proceedings of the Ist
International Seminar of Medical Entomology at Bhopal- 2003 is remarkable in this
connection.\"

Prof. Emeritus Dr. Karamjeet Singh Rai, Notre Dame University, U.S.A. and a resource
person of the seminar opined that \" this publication suggested the scope of further
research studies in the field of insect borne diseases in India.\"
